assignment 3 - character & ad & storyboard

for our third assignment we were tasked with creating a character mascot for a product. for my product I chose a game I am starting to make with a few friends of mine. It is a game where the player runs a dance troupe full of awkward and gruesome monsters and trains them to out-dance the city's other dance teams. It is a deadpan, irreverant game aimed at a young adult market. I designed Hank, the owner of a rundown dance studio where you start the game.

He is a bit of a lazy slob, and his colour scheme is subdued to contrast the vivid, garish colour scheme of the advertisement I designed. I made a poster imitating a wanted ad put out by Hank to recruit the player as an assistant manager of the dance studio. It is heavily inspired by the box art of the 1980s Sonic the Hedgehog video games, which features grid backgrounds, and bright, inappropriately-coloured geometric shapes and zigzags.

Finally, I created a storyboard for the game's introductory video, where Hank hires the player and introduces them to the dance troupe they will be controlling in the game. It has dry humour and is fast-paced, imitating current animated shows that appeal to a young adult demographic, such as Bob's Burgers and Archer.

week 8 - cartoon life drawing

assignment 2 - children's book illustrations

for this assignment i chose from a list of possible children's book scripts, and created 2 two-page spreads, in a cubist style. i chose a story called "The Best Galaxy". the first spread includes pages 2 and 3, and the second spread includes pages 10 and 11.

week 6 - abstraction thumbnails

for next illustration class we were to take an object, preferably one we would draw in our upcoming project, and do a bunch of thumbnail sketches, abstracting it in different ways. i chose a planet, as my next assignment is all set in outer space. it was kinda tough coming up with different ways to abstract a planet, because it's really just a sphere and a ring. i did a bunch, scanned them in and compiled them below.

this exercise really did help for the next assignment, though, as it gave me some ideas for how i'm going to draw personified galaxies.

week 5 - life drawing with shapes

these are some of the roughly 3 minute drawings from live models i did in class today. the last one was about drawing the negative space instead of the actual model. it was a lot of fun once i started getting the hang of it.

assignment 1 - new yorker music issue

2-page spread based on an article about mary j. blige. the lines were done by pressing paper onto an ink drawing done on wax paper, inspired by andy warhol's method of ink drawing prints.  the colours were added in photoshop.
